Orissa piles up 248 for 3 against Jammu and Kashmir

Cuttack, Dec 25 (UNI) An unbeaten 126 by test discard S S Das helped Orissa register 248 runs for three against Jammu and Kashmir on the opening day of the their Ranji trophy match at the Barbati Stadium here today.

Winning the toss and electing to bat on a batting paradise, Orissa openers Bikash Pati and S S Das played comfortably. The two had put on 71 runs without loss and were in no trouble when Pati in a brief lapse of concentration, fell for 24 off Samiullah Beigh.

Niranjan Behera and Subit Biswal, the two other Orissa batsmen who were dismissed today, were also in good nick when they fell for 23 and 30 runs respectively.

Jammu Kashmir captain Kavaljit Singh tried with six bowlers to unsettle S S Das, who had not been in the fine nick in the current Ranji trophy. A determined Das, however, played with caution and later opened up, playing strokes all over the ground.

Das posted his century off 184 balls. At close, he remained unbeaten at 126 with 16 hits to the fence. Orissa captain Prabhanjan Mallick was not out at the other hand scoring 33 runs.

For Jammu and Kashmir, Samiullha Beigh, Raman Dutta and Sameer Khajuria took one wicket each.

Brief score: Orissa 1st Innings :248 for 3 in 90 overs.

Chennai, Dec 25 (UNI) Close on the heels of his former doubles partner Leander Paes's decision to skip the Chennai Open, Indian tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi also announced today that due to tendonitis, he would not be playing in the 416,000 dollar ATP event to be held here from January 1 to 7.
