Manipur boys, girls triumph in junior Sepak Takraw

Chandigarh, Dec 25 (UNI) Defending champions Manipur, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi recorded two successive victories in the boys team championship in the Xth Junior National Sepak Takraw Championship here today.

Manipur began their campaign with an easy 2-0 (21-3, 21-5, 21-9, 21-6) triumph in their opening group A league match against Maharashtra. In the evening session, they logged full points against Uttrar Pradesh whom they routed by 2-0 (21-10, 21-11, 21-10 and 21-5).

Delhi overcame a tough challenge from hosts Chandigarh in a group B match, before registering a hard-fought 2-1 win. Later Delhi prevailed over a stubborn Nagaland 2-1.

In other matches, Tamil Nadu defeated Orissa 2-0 and Uttar Pradesh 2-0.

Manipur dominated the girls six-team round robin league by winning three matches in a row. They accounted for Andhra Pradesh by 2-0, then beat hosts Chandigarh 2-0 and Delhi 2-0.

Prasanna's defiant unbeaten 118 rescues TN

Chennai, Dec 25 (UNI) A defiant, unbeaten century by R Prasanna (118 not out) saved the blushes for Tamil Nadu as the home team reached 264 for eight at close on the opening day of the Elite Group A Ranji trophy cricket match against defending champions Uttar Pradesh here today. Electing to bat first, the hosts looking for an outright win to stay in contention for a semi final berth, began badly losing both the openers.....

Appanna rattles Andhra batting line up

Anantapur, Dec 25 (UNI) Andhra were restricted to 224 for nine, thanks to a fine bowling by rookie KP Appanna on the opening day of the the Ranji Elite Group-A match against Karnataka here today. Appanna struck severe blows to Andhra by taking five wickets for 70 runs. Appanna, who had earlier taken 11 wickets in four matches in the season, first removed LN Prasada Reddy, the century maker against Baroda in the previous game,.....

Woman hockey player attempts suicide

Jammu, Dec 24 (UNI) National woman hockey player Renu Singh attempted suicide by jumping off the Tawi bridge here, police said today. Reportedly depressed after her documents were destroyed in a fire, seventeen-year-old Renu jumped off the bridge at around 1615 hrs yesterday. Police immediately swung into action fished her out in unconcious state. She was taken to the hospital and she survived. A case under section 309 RPC has been registered against Renu. UNI HGV DH.....
