Kasuri rules out sudden solution to Kashmir issue

Islamabad, Dec 25 (UNI) Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri has said there is no possibility of a sudden solution to the Jammu and Kashmir issue, media reports said.

The English-language The Nation newspaper quoted him as saying during an interview with a private TV channel. Mr Kasuri said, ''Our Constitution too provides that any solution to this issue is to be made in accordance with the wishes of the people of the region.'' He said the final decision on the Kashmir issue would be taken by the Pakistani Parliament. He said only ideas were being floated for brainstorming on both sides of border.

Mr Kasuri's remarks came in the backdrop of a debate triggered by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's 'four-point formula on Kashmir issue', which envisages demilitarisation, self-governance and joint management control in the Himalayan region.

General Musharraf's formula gained more significance after the Pakistani foreign office ''said it never claimed Kashmir to be its integral part'', and hinted at accepting a solution other than the within the ambit of the UN security council resolution.

Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasneem Aslam had recently told reporters here her country ''would negotiate a solution acceptable to all stakeholders.'' I Mr Kasuri also referred to what he called hurdles in resolving the Siachen and Sir Creek issues between India and Pakistan and underscored the need of a political will to reach final agreement on these two issues.

On the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline, he said he made it clear to the Iranian leadership they needed to fix some bench mark as far as the matter of pricing was concerned.

An international consultant had made his recommendations in this regard, but these needed to be taken into consideration by the three sides again, he Mr Kasuri added.
