Jaipur has to live with low intensity quakes: GSI

Jaipur, Dec 25 (UNI) The Geological Survey of India (GSI) today attributed the mild tremor here yesterday ''to the movement along Eastern fault line of Jaipur-Kotputli Graben''.

Addressing a press conference here GSI Deputy Director R S Goyal said the epicentre of the tremor has been identified at Barodia village in Dhund River, about 30 km from the state capital.

Dr Goyal said the field study conducted by a team of experts from the GSI found the tremors were felt upto Lalsot, Deoli, Didwana (Dausa area), Sikandra area here in the south-eastern party, Chaksu and Kothun in the south, Dudu in the west and Labana in the northern part of the city. He, however, said no loss of life and property was reported.

He said ''places where the three successive quakes experienced in the state and the one in Rothak in Haryana within a time span of a month fall in the same vertical line (longitude zone) which indicates a fault zone running parallel to Dhund river. It is criss-crossed by faults which have displaced the Dhund river south of Jaipur prominently.'' Dr Goyal said though the major portion of the state lies in ''earthquake low damage risk zone II,'' the neighbouring states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Delhi and the western border with Pakistan lie in high damange risk zones.

Therefore he warned of taking necessary precautions in the construction of high rise buildings here to withstand low intensity quakes.

''Such low intensity quakes could not be ruled out in the area surrounding Jaipur,'' Dr Goyal added.
