Governor urged to delineate panchayat powers

Puducherry, Dec 26 (UNI) Puducherry Panchayat Movement President V A Vasudevaraju today urged Lt Governor Mukut Mithi to take immediate steps for demarcation and delineation of the functions and powers of government departments and panchayats and municipalities here.

In a letter to Mr Mithi, the former IAS officer pointed to the drinking water problem in Kanuvapet area and said there was no coordination between the PWD and the commune panchayat in fulfilling the basic needs of the people. During the past week, it had become a virtual war between these two agencies, he charged.

The fight between the PWD and commune panchayat was due to the government's 'failure' in finalizing and publishing the demarcation and delineation of functions and powers of government departments and panchayat and municipalities, he said. The Kanuvapet problem may be taken as a 'case study' and a solution found by asking the PWD and commune panchayat to work as a team, he added.
