Srinagar, Dec 25 (UNI) As many as 77 Haj pilgrims, including 25 women, from Jammu and Kashmir left here for Jeddah in a special flight today.

Today was the last day of departure for Jammu and Kashmir Haj pilgrims from here to Saudi Arabia. The departure process had started on November 22.

The pilgrims were seen off at the Srinagar Airport by senior officials of the state administration and the Haj Committee.

With this, a total of 10,453 people from Jammu and Kashmir have proceeded on the Haj pilgrimage this year as compared to 9,200 in 2005, which is the highest ever from the state. In all, 1,10,000 Haj pilgrims from India have reached Saudi Arabia for the pilgrimage.

More than 2 million Muslims from around the world have gathered in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, for the annual Haj.

All able-bodied Muslims are required to perform the Haj at least once in their lifetime, if they can afford it. The pilgrims retrace the steps of the Prophet Mohammad in the biggest annual mass movement of the people on the planet.

Three militants surrender in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 25 (UNI) Three Pakistan-trained militants have laid down arms and ammunition before the Army in Kashmir, police said today. Two militants of Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen (TuM) outfit surrendered before 18 Dogra at Uri in Baramulla district in north Kashmir. The third militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen laid arms before 1/9 Grenadiers at the Boucher Post in Uri, police added. Police said the Pakistan-trained militants have been identified as Javed Ahmad, Imtiyaz Ahmad Parray and Nazir Ahmad.....

War like stores recovered in border town of Uri in J and K

Srinagar, Dec 25 (UNI) Alert troops thwarted militant plans to cause disturbances during Republic Day and also target security forces in north Kashmir when they unearthed a hideout and recovered warlike stores in the border town of Uri. A defence spokesman said troops launched a search operation in village Sheri, Uri, about 100 km from here yesterday afternoon following intelligence input that militants had dumped arms.....

Tourism Minister opens Gulmarg Snow Festival 2006

Jammu, Dec 25 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir opened the week-long 'Gulmarg Snow Festival 2006' late last night amid fresh snow clad meadows and ski slopes in the tourist resort. ''Ski slops and ice skating environs in Kashmir and Ladakh region are unparallel and unmatching in the whole world,'' he said. Jammu and Kashmir offered varied models of water tourism including ice skating, ice skiing, night skiing, snow scooter and sledge race.....
