Suicide bomber kills 7 Iraqi police, 30 wounded

BAGHDAD, Dec 24 (Reuters) A suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest killed seven police officers and wounded 30 more today in an attack on a police station in Muqdadiya, northeast of Baghdad, a police source said.

The source said the bomber walked into the police station and blew himself up. There were several more explosions in quick succession that may have been mortar attacks, the source said.

Muqdadiya, 90 km northeast of Baghdad, is in Diyala, a province with a mixed population of Shi'ites and Sunni Arabs that has seen relentless sectarian violence in recent months.

Three in Egypt family test postive for bird flu-WHO

CAIRO, Dec 24 (Reuters) Three members of the same family in Egypt have tested positive for H5N1 bird flu, a World Health Organisation official said today. The WHO earlier said a brother, 26, and sister, 15, had the virus and then said a third relative, a woman aged 30, had contracted it. All three are from the same extended family of 33 living in a single house in a village near the town of Zifta in Gharbiya.....

Olmert's cabinet OKs $100 mln transfer for Abbas

JERUSALEM, Dec 24 (Reuters) Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's cabinet today unanimously approved the transfer of 100 million dollar in Palestinian tax revenues to President Mahmoud Abbas's office, Israeli officials said. Olmert had pledged the funds to Abbas at their first formal meeting held yesterday in Jerusalem. ''The cabinet has approved the transfer of 100 million dollar via Abbas's office,'' an official in Olmert's office said. Israeli media said the decision was unanimous. Officials said.....

Turkmenistan to bury leader, succession undecided

ASHGABAT, Dec 24 (Reuters) Turkmenistan buries today President Saparmurat Niyazov, who isolated the Central Asian state from the world and ruled with an extravagant personality cult, amid signs of a simmering struggle for the succession. The 66-year-old leader, referred to at home as Turkmenbashi or Head of the Turkmen, died of a heart attack on Thursday, plunging into uncertainty a country whose gas reserves are important for Europe, Russia and the United States......
