Russia acclaims Israel-Palestine talks

Moscow, Dec 24 (UNI) Russia today hailed the results of talks between Israel and Palestine, saying they will have beneficial effect on the situation in the West Asia.

''We believe that the positive outcome of these negotiations will have a beneficial effect on the situation in the Weat Asia.

Russia will continue to energetically contribute to this process,'' the official spokesman for Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Kamynin said in a statement.

Mr Kamynin urged all political forces in Palestinian territories and Israel, and also all regional parties concerned to support the results of Israeli-Palestinian talks.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas said at their talks in Jerusalem yesterday that they were committed to the peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of the Road Map plan and spoke for the continuation of regular contacts at the highest level.

The Jerusalem talks had been the first formal meeting at this level in the past 18 months, the spokesman added.

''We give due to the foresight and courage of Olmert and Abbas who, despite the persisting acute problems in bilateral relations, have made this important and, no doubt, positive step towards restarting the Palestinian-Israeli political dialogue,'' Mr Kamynin noted.

Security Council resolution on Iran shows Russia's interests: Lavr

Moscow, Dec 25 (UNI) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today said the new UN Security Council resolution on the Iranian nuclear programme fully reflected the economic interest of Moscow and other partners of Iran. ''The resolution called for finding a good balance of three objectives - to prevent the violation of the non-proliferation regime, maintain conditions for holding talks with Iran and prevent damage to any legitimate ties with Iran in various spheres,'' Mr Lavrov.....

Amartya Sen faints in Dhaka

Dhaka, Dec 25 (UNI) Nobel laureate Amartya Sen tonight fell into a brief state of unconsciousness when he was having dinner at the BRAC-Inn Center here. Mr Sen fainted at about 2200 hrs local time. However, he gained consiousness after some time and his condition was said to be stable, Center for Policy Dialogue Executive Director Debapriya Bhattacharya told UNI. Indian man honoured for act of bravery

Dubai, Dec 25 (UNI) A 47-year old Indian from Kerala has been honoured for his act of bravery after he rescued five people from a sinking vessel that killed 55 people, including 21 Indians, in the worst such tragedy in Bahrain. Nanu Raju rescued the survivors and used a mobile phone to call emergency when the vessel with 150 people on board capsized on March 30. Raju, described as the "Al Dana dhow hero", described for.....
