Punjab Police bust terrorist module sent to disrupt polls

Jalandhar, Dec 24 (UNI) A module allegedly trying to revive terrorism in Punjab during the forthcoming assembly election has been busted, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naunihal Singh told reporters here today.

The police has arrested three members of the reactivated Internatrional Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF-Rode Group) and recovered a huge cache of explosives and ammunition, including eleven Kg RDX.

The contraband including eleven Kg RDX, eleven detonators, four hand grenades, eleven timer devices, two batteries, two pistols, four magazines alongwith 100 cartridges, ten meters of wire and and walkie talkie were seized from the three accused who were having across the border connections, Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh said Jaswinder Singh, 23, of Killi Chahal in Moga district was arrested last evening by the police from Chhoti Baradari here with two Kg RDX, one hand grenade, two timer devices and two detonators, while Amolak Singh, 52, of Akhara village near Jagrao was arrested from Hardyal Nagar here with three Kg RDX, one hand grenade, three detonators, two timer devices, one pistol, two magazines and 50 cartridges.

Third accused, Paramjit Singh, was arrested in Ropar district and was brought here. Subsequently, six Kg RDX, two hand grenades, six detonators, one pistol, two magazines, 50 cartridges, ten Mt wire, battery and walkie talkie were recovered from his native place in Gakhal in Jalandhar district, the SSP said.

Haryana govt sets up Consumer Welfare Fund

Chandigarh, Dec 24 (UNI) The Haryana government has earmarked a sum of Rs 50 lakh for setting up of a Consumer Welfare Fund for the protection of consumer rights, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today announced. The government has also set up 135 consumer clubs in schools in the districts of Narnaul, Hisar, Jind, Sirsa,Gurgaon and Rohtak to educate the students about their consumer rights under the provision of Consumer Protection Act, he said.....

Layer chickens banned in Srinagar

Srinagar, Dec 24 (UNI) The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have banned the entry and sale of layer chickens within the Srinagar municipal limits. An official of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) said the step was taken in the best interest of the people. He said two trucks carrying the chickens were stopped at the Pantha Chowk check post on the city outskirts and not allowed to enter the municipal limits. ''The layer chickens are.....

Naxal terror forces bank closure

Jagdalpur, Dec 24 (UNI) Naxal terror has led to the decision to close a State Bank of India branch at Aawapalli in Chhattisgarh's south Bastar, official sources said. A recent meeting of the Dantewada district-level advisory committee decided to close the branch and merge its officials with the Bijapur branch. The official proposal noted that Rs 5 lakh were looted by the rebels while the amount was being conveyed to the branch from Bijapur three months.....
