Over Rs 20000 crore invested in Karnataka

Hubli, Dec 24 (UNI) While asserting that Railways has made an additional investment of over Rs 5,000 crore compared to last year, the Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu denied that the State was neglected in terms of developmental initiatives.

He pointed out that the Railways made over Rs 20,000 crore of capital investment this year for various railway works in Karnataka as against Rs 15,000 crore last year.

Addressing a press conference here today, after laying foundation stone for New Hubli railway station complex, Mr Velu said that Indian Railways has made significant investment for developmental works in Karnataka despite resource constraints.

On the long pending Hubli-Ankola Railway project, the minister said that since this issue was before the Supreme Court appointed the empower committee to address the issue of environment and forest land, he was concerned that the project could not be taken up for implementation.

Mr Velu, while refusing to shift the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) from Bangalore to Hubli, said that there was no proposal before the South Western Railways on the issue. He also indicated that he will hold RRB examinations on a single day throughout the country.

Responding to another question, Mr Velu informed that still 20 per cent of the total 63,000 km length of railway was under meter gauge and steps were being taken to bring the left over portion uunder unigauge programme in the next budget.

SJM urges Centre to reduce interest rate on bank loans

Hyderabad, Dec 24 (UNI) Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) National Convenor P Muralidhar Rao today demanded that the Centre should reduce interest rates on bank loans to small and medium retail businessmen as they face tough competition from the Multi National Companies (MNCs), which were entering into retail market in the country. Talking to newspersons here, Mr Rao said the banks, providing low interest loans to the MNCs, had been denying loans on low interest rates.....

15 Malaysian devotees hurt in AP accident

Tirupati, Dec 24 (UNI) As many as 15 Malaysian devotees were injured, three of them seriously, when an APSRTC bus in which they were travelling hit another bus between Kapilatheertham and Alipiri Cross Road this evening. Police here said 35 people from Malaysia had come here from Bangalore this morning. The devotees were on way to Tirumala for darshan at the Sri Venkateswara Temple when the driver applied sudden brakes, hitting another bus. The seriously injured.....

NGO comes out with alternative plan on interlinking rivers

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) Water and Food Equitable Distribution Organisation (WEDO), a newly-formed NGO, today came out with an alternative plan of interlinking the rivers to overcome the acute shortage of water in the country. Inaugurating WEDO here, Founder-Director N Seshadri Kumar claimed the interlinking project ''Indian River Grid'' (IRG), developed by WEDO, was an efficient one compared to the National Water Development Agency.
