Minister's pat on Sabarimala arrangement

Pathanamthitta, Dec 24 (UNI) Kerala Devaswom Minister G Sudhakaran today paid compliments to the coordinated functioning of various departments, especially Police and Health, at Sabarimala during the current pilgrimage season.

Speaking at a review meeting on Sabarimala at the Collectorate here, he said the inflow of pilgrims had increased by 40 per cent and a total revenue of Rs 50 crore was expected.

All repair works on roads to Sabarimala would be completed before January five.

Sanitation workers would be retained for a couple of days more after conclusion of the present pilgrimage season.

Mr Sudhakaran said arrangements for the next two years would be planned within two months on the conclusion of the current season.

He directed the departments concerned to take stringent action against shop owners who were found guilty of adulterating food.

Officials of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) told the meeting that so far 7,901 long distance services were operated from Pamba.

Total services on Pamba-Nilackal route stood at 16,000.

During 'Makaravilakku' pilgrimage season, 800 more buses would be pressed into service.

The meeting was also attended by MLAs K Sivadasan Nair, K C Rajagopalan and Raju Abraham, C S Sujatha, MP, Devaswom Principal Secretary K K Vijayakumar and District Collector Asok Kumar Singh.

Electric shock batons to disperse crowd

Morena, MP, Dec 25 (UNI) Used to disperse agitating crowds with the help of bamboo canes, police would now control mobs by giving current from electric shock batons. Battery-operated batons had been provided to every district headquarters and the instrument would prove effective in controlling mobs, official sources said today. The baton administers an electric shock of 24 Volts by contact to a person in the crowd and he leaves the place due to fear......

One killed, three injured in road accident

Ratlam, MP, Dec 25 (UNI) One person was killed and three were injured when two motorcycles collided head-on near a petrol pump at Jawra road, four km from here, police said today. Jawra-residents Ahmed Khan, Shaheed and Mujaffar were returning to Jawra from here on the night of December 23 when their bike collided with another bike, being driven by Mahesh, coming from opposite direction. All the four injured were admitted to hospital where Shaheed succumbed.....

River linking no solution to water problem: Rajendra Singh

Ratlam, MP, Dec 25 (UNI) Magsaysay Award winner and water conservationist Rajendra Singh has said river linking could not provide solution to the water problem in the country. Opposing river linking, Mr Singh told reporters here yesterday that groundwater resources in the country had depleted and both the government and society needed to find solution together. Stressing that decentralised management was needed to tackle the water problem, he said the water crisis was not natural.....
