Lok Sabha member fumes over SWR authorities

Hubli, Dec 24 (UNI) The Union Minister of state for Railways R Velu had to face embarassing situation when he arrived here to lay the foundation stone for New Hubli Railway station complex.

Lok Sabha member from Dharwad South, Manjunath Kunnur, registered his protest for not being invited by the Railway authorities for the function.

As soon as the Union Minister arrived at the venue, Mr Kunnur brought to the notice of the Minister that he was not invited by the South Western Railway officials, breaching protocol.

However, the member got more furious when Mr Velu invited him to dias while the General Manager of SWR remained a mute spectator.

Mr Kunnur then told the minister that he was boycotting the function in protest against the attitude of the Railway authorities and would also bring the same to the notice of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad for insulting him for not inviting for the function.

NGO comes out with alternative plan on interlinking rivers

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) Water and Food Equitable Distribution Organisation (WEDO), a newly-formed NGO, today came out with an alternative plan of interlinking the rivers to overcome the acute shortage of water in the country. Inaugurating WEDO here, Founder-Director N Seshadri Kumar claimed the interlinking project ''Indian River Grid'' (IRG), developed by WEDO, was an efficient one compared to the National Water Development Agency. Scheme to be named after Rajiv Gandhi: CM

Puducherry, Dec 24 (UNI) The scheme, which will provide unemployment allowance to educated unemployed youths in the Union Territory, will be named after Rajiv Gandhi, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said today. Participating in the National Consumer Day function at Madagadippattu near here, the Chief Minister said the administration would make Puducherry a hut free state in another five years by converting all houses into pucca houses. The government was providing 10 kg rice free of cost.....

Shivaraj Patil lauds mutts in Karnataka

Bangalore, Dec 24(UNI) Union Home Minister Shivaraj V Patil has paid rich tributes to various mutts in Karnataka which were providing education to the masses and empowering society. Delivering his address at the 1047th year Jayanthi celebration of the Sri Shivarathreeshwar Bhagavathpada of Suttur Mutt of Mysore, here today Mr Patil said that it was heartening to note that several mutts in Karantaka were engaged in providing education to children irrespective of caste and creed.....
