Kochi, Dec 24 (UNI) Union Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi today stressed the importance of independence in the Judiciary and legal profession to uphold the rule of law to ensure Justice to all.

Addressing the gathering at the enrolment session of the Bar Council of Kerala here, Mr Ravi said independence in the Judiciary and legal profession was paramount for to timely discharge of justice without fear and favour.

'This independence can be balanced by reciprocal respect between the three arms of governance--the Legislature, the Judiciary and the Executive', he noted.

He said the independence would enable the lawyers to discharge their duties, within the law, to advance the interest of the clients fearlessly and assist the courts in upholding the law.

Giving an advice to the 416 aspiring lawyers, who took oath today, Mr Ravi said, 'I want all of you to reflect on the importance of traditional legal ethics and these are infected with a new and unappealing interpretation called modern ethical laws'.

These modern ethics place economic and political considerations above the lawyers duty to uphold the rule of law and this undermines professional legitimacy in the long-run, he noted.

Parliamentarian K Francis George and Binesh Kodiyeri, son of State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan were among those who enrolled as Lawyers.
