Hindustan Samachar to launch Assamese service from New Year

Guwahati, Dec 24 (UNI) Multi-lingual news agency Hindustan Samachar is all set to commercially launch its Assamese news service from January 1.

Announcing this at a function here yesterday, chief advisor ('margdarshak') of the agency Srikant Joshi said the Assamese service could be started on a commercial basis from New Year and newspapers would soon be contacted with the proposal to subscribe it.

He informed that the news agency would aim the launch of news service in all the Constitution-recognised languages in the country as its golden jubilee celebration programme.

The agency currently provides service in six languages, including Hindi, Oriya, Nepali, Marathi and Rajastani.

Woman killed, 17 wounded in separate accidents in Kashmir

Srinagar, Dec 24 (UNI) A woman was killed and 17 passengers wounded in two separate road accidents in Kashmir today, police said. They said a load carrier hit and wounded a woman, Raja, a resident of Pehroo in Anantnag district, at Kangi Gund on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. The woman was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to wounds. A case has been registered in this regard. In another accident, at least 17 people were wounded.....

Corporal punishment will only increase hatred: Expert

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) Educational activist S S Rajagopalan said corporal punishment oly increased hatred in the student's heart and served no useful purpose to the teacher. Mr Rajagopalan, who headed numerous education committees, made the observation while addressing students and teachers at a conference organised by the Students' Federation of India (SFI) here yesterday. Water released from Narora Dam to reach Ganga tonight

Allahabad, Dec 24 (UNI) The 1,000 Cu water released into Ganga from the Narora Dam day is expected to reach the river by tonight. Talking to newspersons, the Ardh Kumbh Mela officer Pragyan Ram Mishra said here today that an additional 1000 Cu water released in Ganga yesterday would clean the water of the river and provide clean water for bathing for the devotees during the Ardh Kumbh starting from January 3 next year.
