Cong leader plea to Sonia, PM

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) Former Union Minister and All India Congress Committee OBC Cell Chairman K C Lenka today urged Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to constitute a separate OBC Parliamentary Committee similar to the one on Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Lenka said it would be very useful for the OBCs if such a committee was formed as it could discuss issues and problems faced by them and sought Parliament's help for the same.

A delegation of OBC MPs recently met Ms Gandhi and Dr Singh in and apprised them on the urgent necessity for setting up the committee.

Mr Lenka thanked Ms Gandhi and Dr Singh and Union Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh for fulfilling the dreams of the OBCs by enacting a special law providing 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in Central Government-aided higher educational institutions.

He also welcomed the Union Government's move to enact another legislation for providing 27 per cent reservation for OBC in private sector also and wanted it to implement the measure at one stroke after discussions with the managements.

RPI-A to contest Municipal elections on its own

Bal Thackeray's campaigning will strengthen Sena; Uddhav

Mumbai, Dec 25 (UNI) Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray today defended involving party chief Bal Thackeray into active campaigning for the upcoming elections to Brihamumbai Municipal Corporation, saying it would boost the party's prospeccts and strengthen it. ''It is not our desperation that we are bringing in the party chief for campaigning but it will strengthen the party further,'' Mr Uddhav Thackeray said after a meeting of party MPs and other office bearers.....

Meghalaya CM likely to shuffle his cabinet

Shillong, Dec 25 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister J D Rymbai is likely to effect a cabinet reshuffle after the week-long Christmas and New Year celebration, a senior Congress leader said. The proposed reshuffle assumed significance in the backdrop of Congress's humiliating defeat in the Rongjeng assembly by-poll, which was won by NCP's Desang M Sangma in a four-cornered contest.
