Chennai Open ticket sales open to fantastic response

Chennai, Dec 24 (UNI) With the strongest field ever assembled for the XII Edition of India's only ATP World Tour Event -- Chennai Open 2007 -- from January 1 to 8, the sale of tickets for all days opened on December 23 to a fantastic response at the SDAT Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium here.

The sales across the city registered a record breaking number -- almost three times higher than those seen in recent years on the first day.

The impressive player field is arguably the best in the history of the tournament followed by the record number of 29 sponsors supporting the event this year. Miss Earth Afghanistan 2003, Vida Samadzai, will grace the week-long event..

According to an IMG official who is in-charge of ticket sales, ''This is truly remarkable. The rush for the tickets reflects the excitement the tournament has created.. Such a record-breaking response augurs well for the tournament.'' Chennai Open 2007 promises some high voltage tennis with nine players who are or have been in the World Top 50 in 2006. Leading the field is World No 2, Rafael Nadal and World No 8, David Nalbandian who are complemented by home-crowd favourites Carlos Moya and Paradorn Srichaphan.

Manoj Ahuja is Wildernest champion

Pune, Dec 25 (UNI) Little known Manoj Ahuja, driving a Ford Mondeo, displayed his driving skills to be adjudged the overall winner by claiming the 1500cc to 2000cc class in the first ever Wildernest Sultans of Speed Autocross championship held at the picturesque mountain-top location near Sinhgadh at Khadakwasla here today. Pathan to return home from South Africa: BCCI

Mumbai, Dec 25 (UNI) Team India paceman Irfan Pathan would be returning home from South Africa so that he could play in the Ranji Trophy games for Baroda, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said here today. BCCI administrative head Prof Ratnakar Shetty told reporters here that the decision to call back the struggling paceman was taken by chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar in consultation with the team management in South Africa. Mumbai, Dec 25 (UNI) A chanceless maiden century by youngster Rohit Sharma (102 not out) put hosts Mumbai in a comfortable position on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group 'B' match against Gujarat as they reached 283 for five at close at the Wankhede stadium here today.
