Centre urges Myanmar to take action against NE insurgents

Aizawl, Dec 24 (UNI) The Union Government has requested Myanmar to adopt a pro-active approach against anti-Indian insurgents of North East operating from Myanmar.

The Union Home Ministry urged Yangon to beef up security along Indo-Myanmar border and put a check on drug trafficking.

Quoting Home Ministry sources intelligence officials here today said India footlinked its demands with an assurance to provide assistance in the form of training and capacity-building of Myanmarese security forces during meeting between Home Minister Shivraj Patil and the Myanmar army chief last week.

Earlier during a home secretary-level talks in September this year, the Indian Home Ministry had told the neighbouring country to agree a verification process to spot the militant camps and flush out the rebels.

In the last round of talks held in Yangoon, India had furnished evidence of 15 militant camps belonging to the NSCN (K), NSCN (IM), PLA, UNLF and ULFA along the 1643-km international border that Myanmar shares with Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.

Students help villagers affected by conflict

Imphal, Dec 24 (UNI) A large number of people have been affected in the ongoing conflict between the army and the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) at Khenjoy village in the Manipur-Myanmar border areas. The troops stationed in Manipur had launched a major offensive to flush out the militants resulting in the fleeing of villagers. The Khenjoy village under Chandel district had been controlled by the UNLF for last few days. The villagers said.....

Three die in road accident

Shillong, Dec 24 (UNI) Three persons were killed when two trucks collided head-on at Meghalaya's Sohryngkham village yesterday. The accident occurred on NH 40 when a speeding coal-laden truck, proceeding towards Guwahati from Jaintia Hills district, collided with another truck coming from Guwahati near Sohryngkham Public Health Centre, killing three people on the spot, police said. Police said, the deceased were identified as Joylan and Rajkumar Burman from West Bengal and Shiv Shankar Singh.....

Nitish calls for awareness among consumers

Patna, Dec 24 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today stressed on making the consumers aware of their rights under the Consumer Protection Act to safeguard their interests. Addressing a seminar here to mark the National Consumers' Day, Mr Kumar said the Act provided three-tier system to protect their interests. He said claims up to Rs 20 lakh could be made at district consumer forum, while state consumers' forum could dispose of the claims up to.....
