K'taka: Cong urge govt.to hold polls to local bodies

Bangalore, Dec 22: The main opposition Congress today urged the Janata Dal (Secular) and Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government to take immediate steps to hold elections to the Localbodies, term of which has ended and warned state-wide agitation if the delay was continued.

Speaking to newsmen after party leaders and Office-bearers meeting here, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Mallikarjun Kharge expressed apprehensions about the coalition government holding elections immediately fearing defeat.

He said that the term of about 213 Civicbodies, representing over 5000 members, was completed long back however the State government was not showing interest to hold elections thus violating constitutional obligation.

He said that his party preparing itself to face the elections.

Mr Kharge announced the admission of Cine actor turned politician former Lok Sabha member and JD(S) leader Shashikumar into the party. "Mr Shashikumar has agreed to join the party unconditionally and has expressed faith on the party's principles and leadership of Ms Sonia Gandhi", he added.

Later speaking to newsmen Mr Shashikumar said that he has quit the JD(S) as it was controlled by former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda and his family members. "In JD(S) there is no any internal or external democracy and was dictated by whims and fancies of Deve Gowda" he alleged.

'Rs 100,000 cr investments in ports, shipping'

Kochi, Dec 22: India will mobilise investments to the tune of Rs 100,000 crore by 2025 in the ports and shipping sector through public-private partnership, Union Shipping Minister T R Balu said today. Addressing a press conference here after presiding over the eighth meeting of the Maritime States Development Council (MSDC), Mr Balu said investments worth Rs 60,000 crore will be mobilised by 2011-12 to meet the target of creating 1.5 billion tonnes annual capacity.....

Woman thwarts father-in-laws attempt to molest

Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, Dec 22 (UNI) An 18-year-old courageous woman thwarted the amorous advances of her father-in-law to outrage her modesty. According to police Javed (50) sought sexual favours from his daughter-in-law eversince her marriage to his son Joseph (28) four months ago. The incident came to light after the woman suffered injuries following the assualt by her father-in-law. The woman was rushed to the CMC hospital at Vellore, police said. UNI KNR JJ 1524.....

Two teenaged girls rescued

Visakhapatnam, Dec 22 (UNI) The city police arrested two persons and rescued two teenaged girls, who were reportedly brought to the city for flesh trade, here today. Police said the arrested P Ravi(25) and his wife Lakshmi (23) of Vijayawada had brought the two girls to the city from Koveru. Later, the girls were handed over to a Children's Organisation, police added. UNI NSR AJ 1456.....
