Tsunami Early warning Systems by Sept 2007

New Delhi, Dec 18: The Early Warning System for Tsunami and Storm Surges in the Indian Ocean is likely to be operational by September 2007, Minister for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said today.

He told the Rajaya Sabha that a centre would be set up at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services INCOIS) at Hyderabad.

Pointing out that an automatic tide measuring instrument had also been established neaar the Indian coastline, the Minister said 50 such Tide Gauges were planning to be installed along the coastline.

Twenty such Tide Gauages had already been installed.

The Ministry is working with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for setting up INSAT-based communication facility for receiving data in real time from Tide Gauges and Bottom Pressure Recorders.

State government should give loans directly to farmers: Sathe

Nagpur, Dec 18 (UNI) Former Union Minister Vasant Sathe demanded a complete loan waiver to farmers in Vidarbha and said the state government should disburse fresh credit to them directly and not through banks or cooperative societies. Speaking to UNI, Mr Sathe said that writing off the outstanding loans would alleviate the suffering of the farmers in Vidarbha.
