Campaign ends for Chandigarh MC, 172 in fray for 25 seats

Chandigarh, Dec 18 (UNI) The campaign spree, led by the ruling Congress and the BJP, for the December 20 elections to the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation ended today, whereas door-to-door campaign will continue till tommorow mid-night.

The electorate of this Union Territory, also the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, would go to the polls for 25 wards for which 172 candidates, inluding 53 women candidates are in the fray.

With total 26 wards in the city, the elections for ward number seven were countermanded following the death of a candidate.

Senior leaders including local Congress MP and Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal, Haryana Transport Minister Randeep Singh Surjewala and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra campaigned for the Congress candidates, while Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, ex-MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, former Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal and Arun Jaitley campaigned of for the BJP-SAD candidates.

The week-long heated campaign, by the Congress, BJP, Bahujan Samaj Party, Nationalist Congress Party, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), Lok Jan Shakti Party and Independents candidates at some places, supported by Chandigarh Vikas Manch, remained peaceful as the local leaders conducted rallies and corner meetings in different localities.

The counting of the votes will take place on December 22 and the results will be declared on the same day.

Gunmen free 17 seized at Baghdad Red Crescent office

BAGHDAD, Dec 18 (Reuters) Gunmen who kidnapped 30 people at a Red Crescent office in Baghdad yesterday have freed 17 hostages, an official of the humanitarian group said today. Maazen Abdulla, secretary-general of the Iraqi Red Crescent, said the victims were released unharmed in different parts of Baghdad yesterday and today. ''Most of them are employees of the Red Crescent,'' Abdulla told Reuters. He said two Iraqi security guards who work at the Dutch embassy adjacent.....

Dubai festival closes with new Arab film awards

DUBAI, Dec 18 (Reuters) In a ceremony as lavish as the Arabian Nights, Dubai wrapped up its third international film festival last night with new cash awards for Arab cinema scooped up by Algerian, Tunisian and Palestinian films. The festival's top prize -- 50,000 dollars for best feature film -- went to ''Barakat!'', an Algerian road movie about a woman's quest to find her husband after he is kidnapped by Islamic militants. Abbas tells Blair he will push on with election plans

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Dec 18 (Reuters) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told British Prime Minister Tony Blair today he would push on with plans for early elections despite bitter opposition from the Hamas government. Blair said it was critical that the international community supported the moderate Abbas in the coming weeks. The two leaders were meeting in the West Bank city of Ramallah just hours after a truce took effect in Gaza following days of heavy fighting.....
