BHU anti-quota brigade takes to 'Gandhigiri'

Varanasi, Dec 18: Medicos at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here today took to 'Gandhigiri' to further fuel the agitation against 27 per cent OBC reservation in institutions of higher education.

Continuing the two-day-old relay-hunger strike, MBBS students of Institute of Medical Science (IMS-BHU) resorted to a 'dharna cum preparation for the ongoing sessional examinations on the road edging the institute.

''We will not shelve the anti-quota stir due to examination pressure and have hence decided to hold street demonstration and prepare for the sessionals simultaneously,'' MBBS students, holding text-books as well as placards bearing anti-reservation slogans, told mediapersons.

Meanwhile, the relay hunger strike by the medicos continued for the third day today with batches of four students staying hungry in support of anti-quota cause.

Convenor of BHU Resident Doctors Association-Youth for Equality Kamal Gupta said that agitating medicos were meeting students from other faculties and departments of BHU to bring all under the banner of anti-reservation. ''We do not want the anti-reservation movement to be confined to IMS or Institute of Technology, but want students of all other departments and faculties to join the agitational bandwagon,'' Dr Gupta maintained.

Students at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Kanpur) are also agitating over the same issue by staying hungry and attending classes at the same time.
