Singh meets Budhhadeb to take stock of Singur

Kolkata, Dec 15: Former Prime Minister V P Singh today met West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to take stock of the facts on Singur and find a solution to the impasse over Ms Mamata Banerjee's opposition to acquisition of agricultural land.

''Our talks were positive. We not only discussed Singur but also matters of larger perspectives concerning the whole country,'' Mr Singh told reporters after an hour-long meeting with the Chief Minister at the Writers' Building.

He, however, did not elaborate on the nature of talks and said he would reveal the details in future.

Mr Singh, on a day's visit to the city, will also meet veteran marxist leader Jyoti Basu and Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee at the dharna manch to request her to call off the indefinite hunger strike.

''I have come here to meet the Chief Minister and Mr Jyoti Basu.

I will also visit Mamata Banerjee at her dharna manch,'' he told reporters.

The arrival of Mr Singh, a close ally of the Left parties, was being viewed as a significant event since he was said to be opposed to acquisition of agricultural land at Singur for setting up Tata Motors' small car factory, However, Mr Jyoti Basu told reporters after attending the CPI(M)'s state secretariat meeting that the former Prime Minister had been fed with wrong facts and the Chief Minister would convince him by presenting the correct informations.

He said the state government was ready to accept any suggestion offered by Mr Singh on the rehabilitation of the displaced farmers of Singur.

''The information given to Mr Singh by some quarters on the rehabilitation package in Singur is not correct. The Chief Minister will give him the right picture when the two will meet,'' he said.

Mr Basu said he himself would also give Mr Singh some facts over the Tata Motors' small car factory.
