RS adjourned twice during Zero Hour on Singur

New Delhi, Dec 12: Rajya Sabha was adjourned twice today with the opposition BJP and Trinamool Congress demanding a discussion on the reported atrocities on farmers in Singur in West Bengal, while the Congress members insisting on a debate on the Gujarat issue.

As soon as the Zero Hour began, Trinamool Congress member Dinesh Trivedi demanded that a discussion be held on the issue of ''forcible acquisition'' of fertile land by the West Bengal Government in Singur to provide it to the Tata Motors and ''atrocities'' committed on farmers.

BJP leader Sushma Swaraj pointed out that an important national leader and TMC president Mamata Banerjee was on hunger strike for the ninth day. Therefore, the House must hold a discussion on the matter.

However, Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan pointed out that the notices for discussion were still pending with Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and none of them have been admitted for discussion during Zero Hour today. So, he ordered that Special Mentions be taken up by the House.

This was opposed by TMC and BJP members who shouting slogans that atrocities on farmers in West Bengal would not be tolerated, and persisted with their demand that a discussion be held on the issue.

Meanwhile, Congress member Rashid Alvi pointed out media reports about the DNA fingerprinting of some skeletons have matched with many of those who went missing during the riots in Gujarat.

Pandemonium broke out in the House as both the opposition and the ruling party members kept on insisting on discussion on these issue due to which Mr Khan had adjourned the house at 1220 hrs for ten minutes till 1230 hrs.
