Former UP MLA passes away

Varanasi, Dec 12 (UNI) A former member of Uttar Pradesh Assembly Channulal Shastri died of a cardiac arrest at his residence in Kandawa locality here early today.

He was 50 and is survived by three sons and a daughter.

Mr Shastri was in active politics since 1976 and was elected to the state assembly from neighbouring Chandauli district in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket.

He later joined the Samajwadi Party but lost the election from the same constituency.

Mr Shastri again unsuccessfully contested Assembly elections in 2003, this time on a BJP ticket from the same Chandauli seat.

The mortal remains of the former legislator were consigned to flames at the Harishchandra Ghat this evening.
