Duggal to visit Punjab ahead of assembly elections

New Delhi, Dec 4 (UNI) Union Home Secretary V K Duggal will undertake a comprehensive review of the progress of development works at Wagah and Attari and law and order situation in Punjab ahead of the assembly elections during his two-day stay in the state starting from tomorrow.

He will be accompanied by Joint Secretary (Police Modernisation) A K Srivastava.

On Wednesday, he will have a meeting with senior state government officers in Ludhiana to review the progress of works and other facilities at Wagah and Attari.

He would review the roadmap for development of integrated check post at Wagah.

The Cabinet Committee on Security recently approved the setting up of Land Ports Authroity of India to oversee the construction, maintenance and management of ICPs on the land border of the country.

Of the 13 ICPs to be constructed at Rs 734 crore, four would be taken up in the first phase. One of these would be set up at Wagah at an estimated cost of Rs 85 crore.

At the meeting in Ludhiana, the Home secretary would also review the law and order and security scenario, including assessment of requirement of forces for the forthcoming assembly elections.

Home Ministry sources said he would also undertake a review of various schemes, administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs, including the police modernisation scheme.

Tomorrow, Mr Duggal would inaugurate the Punjab Police Games in Jallandhar and then visit the various facilities of Punjab Police.

On Wednesday, he will inaugurate the seminar on ''Human Trafficking and Role of Police'', organised by Punjab Police Academy and BPR and D at Phillaur. He would also see the facilities at the Punjab Police Academy.

17 per cent polling in Dungarpur seat by 1100 hrs

Jaipur, Dec 4 (UNI) An estimated 17 per cent polling was reported in the bypoll to the Dungarpur Assembly(ST) seat in Rajasthan by 1100 hrs. As of now, the situation in the constituency in a predominantly tribal belt of the state with nearly 58,628 voters has remained peaceful. The by election was nesseciated by the demise of six-time Congress MLA Nathuram Ahari. The competition is mainly between the Congress' Punjilal Parmar and the BJP's Surmal.....

30 percent polling in Dungarpur seat by 1300 hrs

Jaipur, Dec 4(UNI) Thirty per cent of the 58,620 voters exercised their franchise till 1300 hrs in the Dungarpur Assembly(ST) seat in Rajasthan where by-election is being held today. Polling is going on peacefully in the constituency in the predominantly tribal belt of the state. The by election followed the demise of six- time Congress MLA Nathuram Ahari. The fight is mainly between the Congress nominee Punjilal Parmar and BJP candidate Surmal Parmar though.....

35 per cent polling in Pandhana bypoll

Bhopal, Dec 4 (UNI) About 35 per cent of the 1.56 lakh voters exercised their franchise till 1400 hrs today in the Assembly byelection in Pandhana constituency in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. Polling was progressing peacefully amid tight security with para military forces assisting the district police, official sources said. The by-election was caused due to the murder of sitting BJP MLA Kishorilal Verma. His son Devendra Verma(BJP), Hiralal Silawat (Congress), Vasudeo Atoot.....
