Agricultural summit calls for new skills for farmers

New Delhi, Nov 12 (UNI) Agricultural development has been cited as the keystone for eradicating rural poverty at a conference on farming research concluded here yesterday.

The Global Forum on Agricultural Research 2006 Triennial Conference called for taking greater cognizance of agricultural research to bring food security to rural communities and providing them livelihoods.

The participants sought access to market information, new skills and technology for the farmers to survive and improve their quality of life.

Though the Millennium Development Goals set by the United Nations to achieve eradication of poverty by 2015.

The delegates said agricultural research could be utilised to accelerate its contribution to the rural poor.

The need for a shift in agricultural research systems innovation was strongly expressed at the conference, which demanded more funding for research and innovation.

Young agricultural scientists participating in the meet said agricultural education needs to be reoriented to meet the needs of the society.
