Man commits suicide after facing arrest for non-payment of penalty

New Delhi, Nov 11 (UNI) A resident of Karaval Nagar of North West Delhi today committed suicide after facing arrest for non-payment of hefty penalty levied on him for using his domestic electricity connection for Industrial purposes, police said.

48-year-old Hari Chand committed suicide by hanging himself in his house in West Karawal Nagar this morning, they said.

Police said Hari Chand faced a hefty penalty of Rs 12 lakh levied on him by the BSES Yamuna, after a BYPL enforcement team, during a raid at his house on June 22, found him indulging in a direct electricity theft for industrial purposes.

Sources in the BSES said a penalty notice was raised against Hari Chand on July 1 as per provisions of the Indian Electricity Act 2003 and DERC guidelines.

Police said when Hari Chand did not pay the penalty within the stipulated deadline of July 10, an FIR was lodged at the police station on October 13.

In a statement issued here, BSES denied media reports that the person had committed suicide due to a faulty billing in the BYPL area.
