Vaiko condemns death sentence to Saddam

Chennai, Nov 7 (UNI) Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko today condemned the death sentence awarded to former Iraq President Saddam Hussein, saying the trial was farcical.

In a statement here, he said the death sentence by the trial court was a travesty of justice as even before the commencement of the trial, US President George W Bush had declared that the killing of Hussein was the only aim of the US administration.

It was a mockery of justice as three trial judges who had refused to toe the lines of the US had been sacked. The present judge, who had awarded capital punishment to Hussein was a puppet in the hands of US, Mr Vaiko said.

Stating that a war could not be averted if the death sentence was not nullified, Mr Vaiko wanted India to take the lead in mobilising the support of the world countries to annul the death sentence.
