Rains continue to lash Southern Tamil Nadu, one killed

Madurai, Nov 7 (UNI) One person was killed even as moderate to heavy rains continued to lash the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, affecting normal life in the region today.

Police said the victim, a 35-year-old man was crushed to death in an incident of wall collapse in the temple town of Tiruchendur in Thoothukudi district early today.

The body of a school boy, who was washed away on Sunday at Periyakulam was retrieved by the Theni District fire service personnel this morning.

The incessant rain has also severely affected harvesting operations in certain areas.

In Madurai city low-lying areas like Avaniyapuram and places adjoining the Athikulam tank were partially indundated. Vehicular traffic was thrown out of gear in and around the famed Meenakshi temple.

All the major reservoirs were brimming to full capacity.

Water was released from the Vaigai dam though the flood warning was yet to be issued. Flood warning for residents downstream the Vaigai is expected anytime. While the Periyar dam nearly reached the full capacity of the reduced 136 ft; the storage in Vaigai dam was inching towards the full level.
