Police constable, militants killed in north Kashmir

Baramulla, Nov 7 (UNI) A constable of the Jammu and Kashmir police and a militant were killed and a labourer injured in the valley overnight, official sources said.

They said security forces and police in a joint operation killed a militant in an encounter at Kupwara in north Kashmir this morning.

The encounter ensued after a search party was attacked by the militants, they said, adding one AK rifle and other arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain militant.

They said militants entered the house of police constable Abdul Rashid Mir at Chak-e-Surmarg, Handwara in the frontier district of Kupwara late last night and shot him.

Mir, posted at Chugal Handwara, was on leave.

Militants shot at and wounded critically labourer Mohammad Shafi Choppan at Sopore in this district last night.

Choppan was hospitalised, the sources said.

Tornado kills at least nine in northern Japan

TOKYO, Nov 7 (Reuters) At least nine people were killed, at least 20 injured and others trapped under rubble when a tornado hit northern Japan on Tuesday, local officials said.
