Lightning claims 5 lives in Maharashtra

Beed, Maharashtra, Nov 7 (UNI) At least five persons were killed in different parts of the state after being struck by lightning today.

Three persons including a child, were killed on the spot when lightning struck them today at two different places in Beed district in the Marathwada region of the state.

Shakuntala Pandurang Gawli (35) and her five-year-old son Prashant were killed at Sonijawala village in Kej tehsil of Beed district. Another woman, Sakhubai Jyotirao Dhakne (45), was killed when lightning struck her at Saruk village in the same district, official sources said.

Various places in the district experienced rains, accompanied by thundershowers, this afternoon.

A couple was killed in Western Maharashtra's Kolhapur district. A bullock too was killed after being struck by lightning. The incident occurred at Chennikupi village in Gadhinglaj tehsil of Kolhapur district. The deceased were identified as Ganpati Talware (35) and his wife Vimal (28), police said.

The couple was working in the field along with the farm animals when lightning struck, police added.

Former India captain Umrigar dies

Mumbai, Nov 7 (UNI) Former India captain and one of the all time greats of Indian cricket Polly Umrigar passed away here this evening. He was 80 and is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Polly Umrigar had been undergoing chemotherapy after being detected with cancer for the last few months. His funeral will take place tomorrow morning, family sources told UNI.
