Indefinite curfew clamped on Kamptee: violence continues in Nagpur

Nagpur, Nov 7(UNI) Sporadic violence and arson continued for the second consecutive day here today to protest the massacre of four members of a dalit family by villagers in Khairlanji in Bhandara district of Vidarbha, even as indefenite curfew was clamped on Kamptee town after mobs ransacked the police station and torched two police vehicles.

Protestors brought traffic to a standstill for some time on the busy Nagpur-Hingna Road early this morning as they burnt tyres and pelted stones in Pratap Nagar, Trimurti Nagar, Indora, Ajni and Golibar Chowk localities. Traffic was restored after the protestors fled when the police arrived on the scene.

In Kamptee, about 15 kms here, mobs went on a rampage and indulged in violence and arson since late last night, forcing the police to impose indefinite curfew.

Earlier, the police fired in the air to disperse the mob.

Twenty policemen were injured, six of them seriously, in the violence in the town. Police have arrested 22 people in this connection.

Streets in some localities in West Nagpur wore a deserted look as shops and commercial establishments downed their shutters after protestors staged an impromptu march.

The situation continues to be tense but under control, police said. At least three companies of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) have been called out to assist the city police in maintaining law and order.

Commissioner of Police Shiv Pratap Singh Yadav held a meeting of the peace committee this afternoon.
