HC directs Rs 3.5 lakhs to be paid against death in Army custody

Guwahati, Nov 7 (UNI); A Division Bench of Gauhati High Court has directed the Defence Ministry to pay Rs 3.5 lakh as compensation against a death in custody of the Army in Asom and conduct enquiry to fix responsibility for the act of violation of human rights and fundamental rights of the deceased.

In a judgement, the Division Bench comprising Chief Justice B S Reddy and Justice H N Sarma has directed the Defence Ministry to pay compensation to one Hemadhar Hazarika for the custodial killing of his son Bhupen Hazarika alias Binay Sarma by the Army personnel.

The Court further directed the Secretary of the Defence Ministry to conduct enquiry to fix responsibility on persons found responsible for abusing the powers conferred under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958.

Bhopal, Nov 7 (UNI) In a minor administrative reshuffle, the Madhya Pradesh government today transferred a few officers of the Indian Administrative Service and modified the charges of some others, official sources said. Principal Secretary (General Administration) Sukhiram was posted as Secretary, Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission, and the Narmada Valley Development Authority's Member (Rehabilitation) Rakesh Agrawal was shifted as Managing Director, Mineral Development Corporation. 35-year old pilgrim drowned

Tirumala, Nov 7 (UNI) A 35-year-old person who had come to offer worship to Lord at Venkateswara Temple here was drowned in the temple tank today. Police said the pilgrim was taking a bath when the mishap occurred. The body was recovered from the tank and sent to Government Ruia Hospital at Tirupati for post-mortem.
