Comml Tax official conducts search on Congress leader's granite firm

Bangalore, Nov 7 (UNI) Commercial Tax officials today conducted searches on 10 offices of granite trading firms, including those belonging to close relatives of Congress leader and former Karnataka Minister D K Shivkumar in the City today.

Official sources said that, two teams comprising eight officers conducted the search simultaneously to investigate the matters relating to permits and commercial tax returns filed since the year 2002-03.

Reacting to the search, Mr Shivakumar accused Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy of ''playing vindictive politics.'' ''This is an attempt to bring me a bad name. Our companies have filed all records to the department and conduct business in a transparent manner,'' he added.

Officials, however, said they were not aware whether the Congress leader had any stakes in the offices which were searched by them today.

MP Assembly passes bills

Bhopal, Nov 7 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh Assembly today passed the Maharishi Panini Sanskrit University Bill 2006 by voice vote. An opposition-sponsored amendment proposal for making Rewa the varsity's headquarters, instead of the ancient temple town Ujjain, was defeated by 58 votes to eight. Lightning claims 5 lives in Maharashtra

Beed, Maharashtra, Nov 7 (UNI) At least five persons were killed in different parts of the state after being struck by lightning today. Three persons including a child, were killed on the spot when lightning struck them today at two different places in Beed district in the Marathwada region of the state. Shakuntala Pandurang Gawli (35) and her five-year-old son Prashant were killed at Sonijawala village in Kej tehsil of Beed district. Another woman, Sakhubai.....

'India, England should cooperate to combat terrorism'

Mumbai, Nov 7 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh today said India and England should cooperate with each other to combat terrorism. Mr Deshmukh expressed his views during a meeting with England's External Affairs Minister Margaret Becket who called upon him today. Mr Deshmukh informed Ms Becket that the state police after investigating the Mumbai railway serial blasts and the Malegaon blasts, had provided proof of Pakistan's involvement in the case to the Central Government......
