BJP satisfied over results of UP Mayoral Elections

New Delhi, Nov 7 (UNI) Expressing satisfaction over the results of the local body elections in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP today said President's Rule should be imposed in the state at least a month ahead of the Assembly elections to ensure free and fair polls.

The party, which won eight of the 12 places, however, accused the Mulayam Singh Government of having done its best to rig the elections.

BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the Mulayam Singh Government had adopted ''all electoral malpractices and violence'' to subvert election process in order to retain power.

The results showed that the people had expressed their anguish against the Samajwadi Party in the form of ballot, he said.

These were also indicative of ''things to come in 2007 Assembly elections in the state,'' he said.

Mr Javadekar claimed that the Moradabad voters had elected BJP by 3,000 votes but the administration declared the Samajwadi Party the winner by 1800 votes by declaring 8,000 plus votes of BJP as invalid.

He said the party had also done well in Presidential elections to municipalities and town boards, winning more than 60 and 40 seats respectively. Prominent among these towns are Etah, Muzaffarnagar, Unnao, Khurja, Bijnor, Loni, Sultanpur, Akbarpur, Jaloan, Urai, Pukhraya, considered to be stronghold of the Samajwadi Party.
