Barcelona sweep the board in FIFPro awards

MADRID, Nov 7 (Reuters) Spanish and European champions Barcelona and their leading players Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto'o swept the board in annual awards announced by the professional players union FIFPro today.

Ronaldinho was named FIFPro World Player of the Year for the second time in succession following a vote by 43,000 professionals worldwide, his 19-year-old team mate Messi was chosen as the Young Player of the Year and Eto'o was given the FIFPro Merit award.

Ronaldinho played a key role in steering Barcelona to a second successive league title and victory in the Champions League but had a disappointing World Cup with Brazil.

FIFPro said that Cameroon international Eto'o, who was top scorer in Spain with 26 goals last season, was given the Merit award for his commitment to Africa and African football and for his stance against racism in football.

Barcelona were given the Players for Peace award for their decision to use their shirt advertising space to promote the work of the United Nations children's agency UNICEF.

3,000 detonators seized in Madhya Pradesh

Guna, MP, Nov 7: As many as 3,000 detonators have been seized from a jeep at Bahairia crossing about 65 km from this district headquarters, the police said.The jeep was being driven on Sunday night by Tulsirat Lodhi, a resident of Nayakheda in Ashoknagar district.The vehicle was believed to have been carrying 10,500 detonators and it was suspected that the rest were disposed off earlier.UNI.....

Chennai, Nov 7: S Somasegar, Corporate Vice-President, Developer Division at Microsoft Corporation has been conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by the Anna University. Mr Somasegar has been honoured for his outstanding achievements in the field of Computer Science and in appreciation of technical innovation and excellence, and is the youngest awardee in the history of the University to have been given this honour. In a supplement to its December issue, the UK edition of the magazine devotes a page to ''Upmarket-Downmarket'', and says ''cheap and cheerful favourites are going up in the world''.
