AP seeks Rs 6191 crore from Centre for flood relief

Hyderabad, Nov 7 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today sought Central aid of Rs 6191 crore, including Rs 5000 crore, for modernisation of Krishna and Godavari deltas, to prevent recurrence of severe flood damage witnessed in the Coastal region.

Dr Reddy, who accompanied Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil on an aerial survey of flood-hit areas told him that as per preliminary estimates, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasham districts had suffered a loss of Rs 7083 crore, including crop damage of Rs 1459 crore.

The toll in rain-related incidents rose to 37 in the state with two more deaths, he told reporters here.

Earlier, Mr Patil, after visiting flood-hit areas in Krishna district affected by Cyclone 'Ogni,' promised to provide liberal Central assistance to mitigate the hardship of the affected people.

A Central team would visit the state on November 9 to assess the damage, a report from Vijayawada said.

Meanwhile, the weather office predicted fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall likely in the already flood-hit coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next two to three days under the influence of an easterly wave.

Govt to examine affairs of Margadarsi Financiers: CM

Hyderabad, Nov 7 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said the government would examine the affairs of Margadarsi Financiers following allegations against it. With irregularities surfacing, Union Finance Minister P Chaidambaram had ordered an inquiry into that affairs of the firm, yesterday. It was alleged to have accepted deposits from public violating the rules and regulations. Reacting to the charges of the firm management that the government was also involoved.....
