AIADMK demo against DMK Govt's attitude on fishermen: Jaya

Chennai, Nov 7 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today announced demonstrations to condemn the DMK Government's ''indifferent attitude'' towards fishermen.

In a statement here, she said 150 fishermen in Nagapattinam recently ventured into the sea unaware of the impending cyclonic storm, as the Government had not alerted them.

Due to this, some fishermen died and some were reported missing, while a few others, who managed to reach the shore were struggling for their lives in hospitals, she added.

Similarly, the plight of five fishermen belonging to Kasimedu in the city, who ventured into the sea, unaware of the cyclonic storm, was not known. Following the retrieval of their damaged boat near Poompuhar, the Government had stated that the missing fishermen could not be alive, she said.

Flaying the Government for not making any effort or seeking the Centre's help to search for the missing fishermen, Ms Jayalalithaa said it only showed the Government's ''administrative failure and inefficiency.'' She also recalled various precautionary and rescue measures taken by her previous regime during such circumstances.

Ms Jayalalithaa said the fishermen wing of the party would stage demonstrations in Chennai on November nine and in Nagapattinam on November ten to condemn the Government.
