LIC organises 'Social Security Month'

Vijayawada, Oct 18 (UNI) The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India today organised the current month as 'Social Security month'.

Talking to newspersons here, LIC Senior Divisional Manager (Machilipatnam) Division M Veerabhadra Rao said a special drive was launched by the Corporation to spread the message throughout the country by holding seminars, functions, and meetings of NGOS at workplaces.

Mr Rao said LIC through its Group Insurance Scheme 'Janashree Bima Yojana (JBY) provides Insurance cover to all the weaker sections of the society such as fishermen, beedi workers, plantation workers, agriculturists, urban and rural poor and auto rickshaw workers.

The benefits under JBY was enhanced from August 15 and Rs 30,000 would be paid for natural death, Rs 75,000 for death/permanent disability due to accident, Rs 37,500 for partial permanent disability due to accident.

He said in addition, there is a free add-on scholarship benefit under Shiksha Sahayog Yojana for the children of the members of JBY.

Mr Rao said the LIC had already covered over 1.73 crore persons under its social security schemes across the country.

Commenting on the performance of the security schemes, he said as against the target of Rs 20 lakh in 2006-2007, the company made up about Rs 35 lakh till Sep 30 by achieving 178 per cent of the budget.

Dengue death toll 35 in Delhi

New Delhi, Oct 17 (UNI) With dengue showing no signs of abating, the toll in Delhi rose to 35 as one more patient died in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Twentyfive-year old Rohit Sharma, a resident of Bareilly, succumbed to dengue fever last night. He was admitted to the institute in critical condition last night and died within an hour. The reported number of dengue cases in Delhi has crossed 1,637, officials.....

Rice worth Rs 950 crore seized from Gandhidham godown

Gandhidham, Gujarat, Oct 18 (UNI) In the biggest ever seizure by the Kutch Civil Supplies department, about 6,400 tonnes of rice valued at Rs 950 crore was seized from Al Gyas Rice Sawtex Mill godown at Chudhva village, 10 km from here last night. Al Gyas mill, which also exports rice, claimed it was selling rice procured from Karimnagar in Andhra Pradesh and from Bavla near Ahmedabad. However, when the civil supplies department raided.....

No death certificates 10 years after Malta boat tragedy

Chandigarh, Oct 18:  The Punjab government has not yet issued death certificates of the victims of the Malta Boat Tragedy, that exposed the international human trafficking in Europe a decade back. As many as 170 Indians, 88 Pakistanis and 149 Sri Lankans drowned in the Malta-Sicily channel on the offshore of Italy when their boat collided with a ship during a mid-sea transfer of these illegal migrants on the intervening night of December 24-25 in 1996.Out of.....
