Indian challenge over, Bhupathi too crashes out of Madrid Masters

Madrid, Oct 18 (UNI) Mahesh Bhupathi had the same fate as his estranged partner Leanmder Paes as the strapping Indian and his American partner James Blake crashed out of the men's doubles event at the Madrid Masters with a straight set defeat in their first round match.

The Israeli pair of Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram dropped just three games in the entire match on their way to a facile 6-0, 6-3 win in the Euro 2,082,500 tournament.

It was a hopeless capitulation by the Bhupathi-Blake pair who could not find their feet in the first set and was blanked by the Israeli duo.

The second set went slightly better but not more than that. The Indo-American pair did manage to win three games but that was just not enough to stop their rivals from crushing them with consummate ease.

Earlier, Paes and his Czech partner Martin Damm also made an early exit from the doubles event after the unheralded Polish pair of Mariusz Fyrsttenberg and Marcin Matkowski downed them 6-7(3), 6-2, 12-10 in a marathon match.

North Korea has said the UN sanctions imposed after its test of a nuclear device last week were tantamount to a declaration of war. One way to show its defiance, short of another test, may be to shut down the.....

Checks, but no scrutiny, on China-N.Korea border

DANDONG, China, Oct 18 (Reuters) Chinese customs agents checked papers and trucks on the border with North Korea today, but there was no sign of increased scrutiny despite UN sanctions over the North's reported nuclear test. China joined in the UN Security Council's 15-0 approval of a US-drafted package of financial and weapons sanctions against North Korea, its old Communist ally and trading partner. But Beijing made clear it would not conduct searches of cargo.....

China promises democracy, but under party thumb

BEIJING, Oct 18 (Reuters) China's ruling Communist Party promised to expand citizens' political rights as part of a programme to tame rising social conflict, but insisted the party must maintain control as it navigates turbulent change. The promises came in the Communist Party Central Committee's decision on ''building a harmonious socialist society'', which was approved by a meeting last week but released only today. ''We will implement democratic elections, decision-making, administration and oversight,.....
