Asif is absolutely clean, asserts agent

Lahore, Oct 18 (UNI) Rejecting recent reports of cannabis indulgence by pacer Mohammad Asif, his London-based agent Azhar Majeed has clarified that the lanky bowler has never abused the substance and neither were the Pakistani players represented by him addicted to drugs.

Majeed, reacting to eye-witness accounts of Asif and fellw pacer Shoaib Akhtar smoking cannabis during the recent tour of England, said while he could not comment on the 'Rawalpindi Express' as he did not represent him but could vouch for Asif's innocence.

''I am not speaking for Shoaib Akhtar here because I do not represent him, but as far as Asif, Shoaib Malik and a few others are concerned they are absolutely clean,'' Majeed told the 'Dawn'.

The pace duo are fighting to save their career after testing positive for banned anabolic steroid nandrolone and the damaging reports of them smoking cannabis has added to their woes.

Majeed categorically denied any drug abuse by the players during their stay in England and said the players were being wrongly accused.

''I myself am a teetotaller and abhor such habits in people. I wouldn't be representing these players had they been involved in foul play of this sort,'' he said.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has also denied supplying drugs to Pakistani players.

''It is absolutely wrong to implicate me in such dirty business,'' he said.
