Infections lead to complications in cataract surgery

Sambalpur, Oct 1 (UNI) An infection has led to complications in the cataract operation of 14 people in the Deogarh District Hospital, in which two persons had already lost their vision.

An infection which might have occurred during or post the operation led to the complications, said VSS Medical College and Hospital Ophthalmology Department Professor Dr Guna Sagar Dash who had conducted an inquiry into the incident on the direction of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

Fourteen people had undergone a cataract operation at the Deogarh Hospital, under the National Blindness Eradication Programme on September 13 and 14 last.

Official sources said four of the 14 people operated for cataract developed severe pain. The condition of two patients was so critical that the doctors had no other option but to remove their eyes.

The seven people brought to the VSS Medical College and Hospital were still undergoing treatment. Five more people who also underwent cataract operation were admitted to the Hospital on Friday.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while expressing his concern over the incident said the state government would bear all the medical expenses of the victims.

Deogarh M P Dharmendra Pradhan visited the hospital and enquired about the condition of the patients.
