Veteran freedom fighter and former UP minister dead

Allahabad, Sep 30 (UNI) Veteran freedom fighter, senior journalist and former Uttar Pradesh information minister P D Tandon died in a city hospital today following prolonged illness.

He was 95.

Mr Tandon had actively participated in the freedom struggle and was jailed several times.

He was closely associated with former Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru and Indira Gandhi and remained associated with Congress throughout his life.

Mr Tandon was also a writer and used to write columns in newspapers regularly.

Leaders of several political parties, social workers, teachers and officials have condoled his death.

His cremation will take place tomorrow.

Guinean refugees stay behind as UN closes camp

CONAKRY, Sep 30 (Reuters) Some 400 refugees from Sierra Leone's brutal 1991-2002 civil war today remained behind when the United Nations' refugee agency closed a camp in southern Guinea. The UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) announced the closure of the Boreah facility near the town of Kissidougou two years ago, but a group of 1,000 refugees remained in the hope of winning asylum in Western countries.
