UP regime of capitalists and musclemen will go: V P Singh

Barabanki, Sep 30 (UNI) Former Prime Minister and Jan Morcha leader V P Singh today said the ruling dispensation of ''capitalists and musclemen'' in Uttar Pradesh would be replaced by a government of farmers and labourers in the 2007 assembly polls.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Singh alleged that criminals and capitalists were ruling in the state. ''This regime would soon come to an end.'' Pressing for a change in the law governing land acquisition, he assured if Jan Morcha formed the next government, the law would be abolished.

''A bill that bans aquisition of farmers' land should be introducted in the next session of Parliament,'' Mr Singh demanded.

He also reiterated his demand that the state government should reduce reduced the 22.5 per cent cess on diesel to 6 per cent.

''Only Jan Morcha is fighting for the casue of farmers.'' Replying to a question, the former Prime Minister observed clemency to Mohd Afzal Guru -- awarded capital punishment in the 2001 Parliament attack case -- was the sole prerogative of the President.

'Hanging of Guru will be another mistake'

Srinagar, Sept 30: Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani today urged the Centre not to commit ''another mistake'' by hanging yet another Kashmiri youth Afzal Guru.''The hanging of Guru, prime accused in the December 13 Parliament attack, on October 20, will further complicate the situation in Kashmir valley where more than one lakh people have been killed during the past 17 years of freedom struggle,'' Mr Geelani said at a press conference at HC.....

Police investigate Australian mosque shooting

SYDNEY, Sep 30 (Reuters) Police and Australia's top spy agency are investigating a drive-by shooting at a mosque in western Australia in which about 400 people were praying, officials said today. A single shot was fired through a second-floor window of the mosque in a suburb of Perth, the Western Australian state capital, late yesterday, narrowly missing women and children, police said. No one was injured and the bullet, said to have been fired from.....
