Mumbai, Sep 28 (UNI) Dmitry Trusunov, the fourth seed from Russia, today upset the applecart of top seed Tommy Robredo in a tough three setter at 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-1 to make to the finals of the US 3,80,000 dollar Kingfisher Airlines Open tennis tournament being played at the CCI hard courts here today.
He will face the third seed from the Czech Republic, Tomas Berdych, who earlier stopped the giant killing run of Stefan Koubek of Austria in straight sets at 7-6 (2), 6-2.
Trusunov, whose confidence has risen sky high after the recent victory over Andy Roddick of America in a Davis Cup match at 17-15 in the fifth, started off on a positive note to put pressure on world number 7 and top seed Robredo.
However, it was Robredo who took the upper hand as he broke the Russian in the seventh game to go up 4-3. Tursunov came back and broke back in the 10th game to level at 5-5 and then force a tie-breaker in the first set.
In the tie-break, it was Tursunov who opened up a big lead and then wrapped up the first set at 7-2.
Robredo, not one to throw in the towel easily, came back in the second, going for a break in the very second game, but was broken back in the seventh game.
The top seed, however, was not to be denied as he broke Tursunov in the eighth game and then served out the set at 6-3 to force a decider.
It was Tursunov all the way in the decider as winners flowed from his racquet with Robredo not knowing what to do. The Russian raced to a 5-0 lead with breaks in the second and fourth games to shut out the Spaniard.
Robredo got himself on the scoresheet finally in the third set.
But, it was too late as the Russian wrapped up the third set 6-1 to move into the finals in two hours and nine minutes.
