3 get 1 yr imprisonment for attacking police party

Rajkot, Sep 30: A local court sentenced three men to one year imprisonment and fine of Rs 2600 each for attacking a police party at Chhashia village in this district in which five police personnel were injured.

Additional Sessions Judge F Y Ghanchi yesterday pronounced his verdict in which three were found guilty.

According to prosecution, the accused -- Kesho alias Kalio Ratna Koli, Dhanji Najabhai Koli and Amba alias Aalla Jograji Koli -- were found guilty for attacking the police party and organising an illegal mob, of them 54 have been acquitted, giving them benifit of doubt.

A police party led by Police sub-inspector K N Gohel had gone to Chhashia village of the district on June 11, 1995 where they saw the Chhakda-Rickshaw owners parking their vehicles illegally near the bus station. The police then had detained the vehicles and registered the cases against the owners.

Later, the irate drivers and owners of the vehicles assembled and objected to it and started pelting stones at them. They also damaged the police vehicles and demanded the withdrawal of cases against them.

They had also tried to snatch the service revolver of Mr Gohel.

The police had to open fire four rounds in the air to disperse the mob.
