Tsunami warning, storm system to be set up

Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Sept 30: The Centre is setting up an Early Warning System for tsunami and storm, surges in Indian Ocean at a cost of Rs 125 crore, according to an official spokesman of Department of Ocean Development (DoD) here today.

Talking to UNI he said the system was being set up by DoD in association with Department of Science and Technology, Department of Space, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Academia.

The system aims at near-real time determination of earthquake parameters in the two known tsunamigenic zones of Indian Ocean Region, using a network of land-based seismic stations, establishing a comprehensive real time Ocean observational network comprising Bottom Pressure Recorders around the two tsunamigenic zones, Tide Guages, Radar based Coastal monitoring station.

He said developing numerical models for Tsunami and storm surges with all associated data inputs, generating coastal inundation and vulnerability maps and operating it on round the clock basis for generation of timely advise.

A cente would be set up at the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.

The system is scheduled to be operational shortly.

Thai taxi rams into tank in apparent coup protest

BANGKOK, Sep 30 (Reuters) A Thai taxi driver with slogans sprayed on his car today rammed into a tank in Bangkok in an apparent protest against the Sept. 19 putsch that ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. ''The car was badly damaged but the tank was unscathed,'' Police Major General Ekapol Tawichwongchaikul told Reuters. Thai newspapers reported on their Web sites that the words ''destroying the country'' and ''die for the country'' had been sprayed.....

Scottish police hunting missing woman find body

LONDON, Sep 30 (Reuters) Scottish police searching for a missing Polish woman have found a body hidden in the Glasgow church where she had been staying, police said today. Student Angelika Kluk, 23, was missing since last Sunday and had been staying at the priest's quarters at St Patrick's Church in the city of Glasgow in western Scotland.
