JIPMER staff call of stir

Puducherry, Sep 30 (UNI) Normalcy returned to the JIPMER Hospital today as employees called off their 22-day strike and resumed duty following a direction from the Madras High Court.

JIPMER Employees Struggle Committee Lleader Arokiyam Kalaimathy told newspersons the staff were resuming duty following the court's directive.

Meanwhile, the committee leaders are holding talks with the JIPMER director regarding the termination of nurses. The court has asked the institute's administration to deal with the issue.

The employees started their indefinite strike on September 8 to protest the grant of autonomous status to the institution, throwing medical services into disarray.

Suspected killer of Briton "sends cash" to bereaved

TOKYO, Sep 30 (Reuters) A wealthy Japanese businessman accused of killing British woman Lucie Blackman sent 100 million yen (850,000 dollars) to the former British Airways flight attendant's family, Kyodo news agency reported on today. Quoting defence lawyers for Joji Obara, charged with killing Blackman in 2000, Kyodo said the Japanese man had sent the ''condolence money'' to her family in Britain. US Senate votes to extend Iran sanctions

Washington, Sep 30: The US Congress agreed today to extend sanctions on Iran set to expire this weekend that are aimed at choking off funds that could aid Iran in developing nuclear weapons.With Congress scrambling to finish business before heading out to campaign for Nov. 7 elections, the Senate approved a bill that matched one the House of Representatives approved on Thursday to keep the sanctions from expiring.The bill would renew for five more years economic sanctions.....

Schumacher pips Alonso in final Chinese GP practice

SHANGHAI, Sept 30 (Reuters) Ferrari's Michael Schumacher and Renault's Fernando Alonso pursued a private duel at the top of the timesheets in final Chinese Grand Prix practice today. Schumacher was the quickest, 0.172 seconds ahead of champion Alonso, on a damp track after morning drizzle at an overcast circuit.
