G K Pillai takes over as Commerce Secretary

New Delhi, Sept 30: Mr G K Pillai of 1972 batch of the Indian Administrative Service took over as Commerce Secretary here today.

He succeeds Mr S N Menon who superannuated.

Prior to his appointment as Commerce Secretary, Mr Pillai was Special Secretary in the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, dealing with matters relating to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), RMTR (Regional and Multilateral Trade Relations) and UNCTAD.

He was also looking after matters pertaining to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and Export Oriented Units (EOUs) and is Chairman of the Board of Approvals (BOA) on SEZs and EOUs in the Department of Commerce.

He has represented the state and central government in delegations to the US, European Union (EU), Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Slovenia and United Kingdom (UK).

He is also Chairman of the Grievances Redressal Committee on matters relating to foreign trade and Regional Trade Arrangements (RTAs)/ Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)/ Preferential Trade Arrangements (PTAs).

Belonging to the Kerala cadre of the IAS, Mr Pillai had worked in diverse fields in the state government of Kerala including as District Collector of Quilon, Special Secretary for Industries, especially the traditional industries of cashew, coir and handlooms, Secretary, Health and as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister of Kerala.

In the central government, he had worked in the Ministries of Defence, Shipping and Transport and in the Ministry of Home Affairs, dealing with the North Eastern states.

Govt would develop sports in the state: CM

Hyderabad, Sep 30 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhara Reddy today said his government would develop sports from the village level to bring out talent. Declaring open the CM's Cup State Sports Meet at the Lal Bahadur Stadium here he said that his government would encourage sports at the village level by conducting sports competitions. Chairman of Sports Association of Andhra Pradesh(SAAP) and President of the organising committee M.S.Raj Thakur said.....

Gurgaon, Sep 30 (UNI) Second seeded Aishwarya Aggarwal of India put an end to compatriot Ratnika Batra's giant-killing spree, thrashing her 6-1, 6-3 to lift the Asia U-14 ITF tennis tournament title here today. Batra, who had upset top seeded Shweta Rana, six seeded Parthana and fifth seeded Natallia Khaniejo en-route to the final, could not match the firepower of her much higher ranked rival and went down tamely. B'desh oppn says stage set for talk on reform

Dhaka, Sept 30: Bangladesh's main opposition party, the Awami League, is set to hold talks with the ruling party on electoral reforms to make national elections in January free and fair, a key opposition leader said today.''Now we shall seek to fix a date, venue and time for the talks, in the next few days,'' Abdul Jalil, Awami League general secretary and coordinator of a 14-party alliance, told reporters.Mr Jalil has been authorised by his party to discuss.....
