First injuries reported in 8th Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalayas rally

Shimla, Sep 30 (UNI) Two participants of the 8th Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalayas Rally were injured when their Swift car went off the road near Neerath in Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh here this afternoon.

The organisers said that the injured participants were identified as as Vijayan and Parmeshwaram, who bowed out of the rally besides five vehicles that checked out due to mechanical faults.

Earlier, the rally was flagged from Peterhoff, near here, by State Bank of India DGM Raj Kunwar.

The seven-day event would have two independent race formats concurrently, featuring twenty-nine cars and 32 motorcycles in the ''extreme category'' and 31 vehicles in the ''reliability trial''.

The rally, jointly organised by Department of Youth Services and Sports and the Himalayan Motorsport Association (MTA), would traverse through Manali, Kaza, Dhankar, Patsio and Leh before coming to end at Manali on October six.

Four women drivers are in the fray in the four-wheel category besides five foreign teams with a total of 66 in this category, 36 each in the Reliability Trial and two-wheel categories.

The rally would terminate at Manali on October six and the prize distribution ceremony would be held the following day.

PM rides historic train in South Africa

Pietermaritzburg, (Durban) Sep 30 (UNI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today had a ten minutes ride on the vintage train from which Mahatma Gandhi was evicted on June 7, 1893. Describing it a ''soul steering experience and pilgrimage'', the Prime Minister unveiled the plaque at Pietermaritzburg station on the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was thrown out from the ''Whites Only'' compartment of the train. Youth attempts self-sacrifice

Shajapur, MP, Sep 30 (UNI) In an attempt to sacrifice himself, a 32-year-old man slashed his throat with a knife last night at Badaud town in this district, police said today. Superintendent of Police Asha Mathur said Chandrapal Singh alias Tanwar Singh was admitted to hospital in Ujjain in serious condition by his father Sardar Singh and his mother. On receiving information, police reached the spot and seized the knife. Chandrapal had discussed about offering.....

Mumbai blast accused arrested: handed over to Mumbai police

Hyderabad, Sep 30 (UNI)An accused in the recent Mumbai blasts in suburban trains was arrested by Mumbai special branch police in the city in the early hours of today. Of the seven planters of bombs, four have been arrested. They are Faizal Sheikh, who planted bomb at Jogeshwari, Kamaluddin Ansari, whose IED exploded at Matunga, Ehtesam Siddique, whose act triggered blast at Mira Road, and Naved, arrested in Hyderabad today.
